Senior Full Stack Java Engineer

Sofia, Bulgaria

Our client is the leading source of actionable intelligence for the global insurance, reinsurance and ILS markets. Their reporting and exclusive data tools give senior leaders the clarity they need to anticipate shifts and make confident decisions. For their team, they need a Senior FS Java Engineer. This is an individual contributor role with technical leadership, not a people-management position. You will act as the technical lead on the features you own, steering implementation alongside fellow developers and QA, setting the technical approach, reviewing work and unblocking others. If you thrive on technical complexity and want real ownership of what you build, this role is for you.

Your day-to-day impact:
✔ Design, build and maintain high-quality, scalable and secure services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot, together with the React interfaces that sit on top of them.
✔ Own features end to end, from data model and API design through frontend implementation, testing, deployment and production support.
✔ Write clean, well-structured, maintainable code and hold a high bar for quality through code review and pairing.

Integrations, Migrations & Platform Evolution:
✔ Own complex integrations across our CMS, subscription platform and third-party services, working through ambiguity across multiple systems without hand-holding.
✔ Plan and execute migrations of data, services and functionality with minimal disruption to customers and editorial users.
✔ Evolve the existing product stack, improving performance, reliability and maintainability while it continues to serve customers.

Integration with the AI-Powered Platform:
✔ Support the integration between our existing product stack and the new AI-powered platform, building the APIs, services and data flows that connect our CMS, content, data and subscription systems to it.
✔ Apply event-driven and API-first patterns where they make sense so that integrations between the two platforms stay reliable, modular and extensible.

Technical Leadership & Ownership:
✔ Lead the technical implementation of features within a small delivery team, breaking down work, setting the technical approach and guiding other developers and QA through delivery.
✔ Make sound architectural and design decisions independently, documenting trade-offs and aligning with other technical leaders on wider standards.
✔ Mentor engineers informally through code review, pairing and knowledge sharing, raising the standard of engineering around you.

Quality & Operational Excellence:
✔ Build quality in from the start through unit and integration testing, and work closely with QA to ensure robust coverage.
✔ Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and alerting, proactively identifying and resolving defects and performance bottlenecks.
✔ Keep documentation clear and current so that systems remain easy to understand and build on.

Collaboration:
✔ Work closely with product, editorial and commercial colleagues to understand needs, shape requirements and deliver the right solution at the right time.
✔ Partner with the DevOps team to define infrastructure needs and shape how environments, deployments and supporting services are built for the features you own.
✔ Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Your profile looks like that:
✔ 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a backend-first full-stack profile.
✔ Strong, production-level experience with Java and Spring Boot, building and maintaining REST APIs and backend services.
✔ Solid experience building modern frontends with React.
✔ Good working knowledge of SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL or equivalent) and NoSQL databases, including data modelling and performance considerations.
✔ Hands-on experience with Docker, Git and CI/CD pipelines.
✔ A proven track record of owning complex integrations or migrations end to end in multi-system environments.
✔ Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and clear communication in English.

You are a great fit if you have:
✔ Experience with message brokers such as Kafka or RabbitMQ and with event-driven architecture patterns.
✔ Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure).
✔ Background working with CMS, publishing or subscription and paywall platforms.
✔ Exposure to AI-powered products, or experience using AI coding tools to work more effectively.
✔ Working knowledge of Python, TypeScript or Node.js.
✔ A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

They offer, not just a nice team and environment, but:
✔ 25+ days of annual holiday.
✔ The chance to help connect a mature, market-leading product with a new AI-powered platform.
✔ A fast-paced, supportive and innovative environment built on independence and trust.
✔ Support for continuous learning, with opportunities for career growth and professional development.
✔ Flexible working hours and hybrid working.
